There are some pretty impressive sound cards out there tha can do just about everything imaginable. Unless you are competing in tournaments around the world, some of these bells and whistles are not really necessary. In fact, you will find most of the options and programs that come with the high end sound cards will never be utilized.
Most gamers play with headsets on , therefore some of the sound limitations are with the quality of your headset. First start out with a good quality headset that is comfortable, then if you feel you are missing something during the gameplay (not hearing players moving around you, etc) then consider a sound card upgrade. The latest cards can also free up some much needed computing resources from your CPU and help handle the load, resulting in faster operation of your computer.
Everything is a trade off and there is much to gain from high end cards. The question is if you are gaining enough to offset the hi costs of hi end cards.
